An Exploration of Ammonia NOx Emissions Using CFD

Alex Tharpe

As the aerospace industry works towards the development of carbon-neutral power systems, ammonia has taken the stand as a candidate for the fuel to replace the traditional hydrocarbons.  With the implementation of ammonia fuel comes new challenges with toxicity and elevated combustor NOx emissions compared conventional hydrocarbon fuels, which are relatively much less of a challenge to control. This webinar will break down the three mechanisms of NOx formation, as well as go into detail as to why ammonia combustion is a notorious producer of NOx. The final portion of the presentation will be a discussion on different methods NOx reduction for ammonia engines and why a carefully designed two-stage ammonia combustor could be an essential means of reduction for aerospace engines in particular.
