For Stockroom Workers

For Stockroom Workers

Guidelines for stockroom workers:

  • Above all, be courteous when helping students and faculty with equipment requests. Think how you like to be treated when shopping or eating out and treat your “customers” the same way.
  • University guidelines require work-scholarship students to work 75 hours per semester and work-study students to work 96 hours per semester.  If you miss work time for any reason, you will be required to make up that time.  Notify the stockroom or the department office if you know you are gong to have to miss an assignment.
  • If you are not sure where equipment is located in the stockroom, consult the blue “Stockroom Organization” notebook.
  • When students check out equipment from the stockroom, have them record the following information on one of the white note cards.  File the note card alphabetically in the small card file box.
    • Name
    • Date
    • Course
    • Equipment checked out
  • Before taking equipment to a freshman lab, make sure a checkout new sheet has been prepared.  The course number, time, date, and equipment list should be on the checkout sheet.  Do not allow students to get equipment without their signing the checkout sheet.
  • When students check in equipment, inspect it to make sure it is clean and unbroken.  Make sure all items have been returned.  Make sure the student crosses out their name on the checkout sheet or locate and tear up their card.  If the equipment is dirty, have the students go back and clean it.  Otherwise, you will be expected to clean glassware before returning it to stock.
  • If students have broken or do not return equipment, they may pay for it by cash or check (payable to TTU).  If the cash drawer is locked, slip the cash or checks through the night deposit slot.  You must fill out a receipt for each transaction and give the white copy to the student.  Verify before writing the receipt that you have not skipped any numbers.  Keep the yellow copy for the business office and the pink copy in the book.  The receipt should include the following:
    • Correct date
    • Student’s name (SSN not required)
    • Description and cost of item(s)
    • Total amount received
    • Your signature

Note: Payment is not required at the time of breakage/loss, but students must pay by the end of the semester in order to receive their lab grade.

  • The last person working at the end of the day should close and lock the window doors, turn off the lights, and make sure the stockroom door is closed and locked.
