Archery Information

Anchor – The place you draw the string.
Anchor Point – The place on your face where you draw the string
Arm Guard – A device to protect the arm
Arrow Rest – A device on the bow where the arrow rests during the shot
Back – The side of the bow away from the shooter
Bare Bow – No accessories
Belly / Face – The near side of the bow while you are holding it in your hand

Berger Button – A spring loaded plunger in the middle of the rest area to maintain even pressure as the arrow passes the bow.

Bolt – A short arrow usually under 22 inches used in a cross bow.
Bow – A device for casting arrows.  Straight, recurved, compound and cross bow.
Bow Arm / Hand – The hand that holds the bow while shooting
Bow Notches – The groves at the end of the bow where the string goes
Bow Sights – Anything used to aim the arrow
Bow String – The part of the bow that makes the thing work
Bow Stringer – a device that is used to aid the archer in stringing a bow
Bullseye – The 9 ring
Cast – The act of propelling an arrow
Center Serving – Serving in the middle of the bow string
Clout – A game of archery at 180 yards with a 48 foot target
Cock Feather – or Index Feather- The odd colored fletching that is at right angle to the bow
Composite Bow – A bow made of more than one material

Compound bow – A bow with cables and pulleys

Creep – Partially letting down the draw before the release
Crest – The colored stripes on the arrow
Draw – The act of pulling the string back.
Draw Weight – The force necessary in attaining full draw
End – A set number of arrows. I this class it is 3
Extend – The first part of the Draw. Push the bow outward first, then pull the string back
Face – The near side of the bow while shooting
Field Archery – Shooting at unknown distances at animal type targets
Finger Tab – Any of the many finger protectors
Fletching – The feathers or plastic on the arrow
Flinch – The uneven movements that a lot of people have while shooting
Flu-Flu – An arrow with extra-large fletching
Follow Through – The last of the Nine Steps To the 10 ring
Game – Several ends. Usually at the same distance. A Portion of a Round
Glove – A device to protect your fingers while shooting
Grip – The part of the bow where your hand goes
Ground Quiver – A device attached to the ground to hold arrows while shooting
Group – The pattern of several arrows shot at a target
Gun Barrel – The high anchor position where you look down the arrow
Handle Riser – The thick center portion of the bow between the upper and lower limb
High Anchor – An anchor above the mouth line
Instinctive – snap shooting without aiming
Laminated Bow – A bow that is made in layers
Let Down – Letting the string down from draw without casting the arrow
Limb – The upper and lower portion of the bow
Loop – The hole at the end of the string that goes in the notches
Low anchor – An anchor below the mouth line
Mat – The large portion of the target that holds the target face
NAA – National Archery Association – the national governing body for archery in the USA
Nock – The usually plastic end of the arrow that snaps on the string
Nock Locator – A bump on the string used to place the arrow correctly
Nocking Point – The place on the string where you place the arrow
Peep Sight – A hole in the string used in sighting
Petticoat – The portion of the target outside of the scoring area
Pinch – Pinching the arrow while drawing
Pluck – Pulling the string away from your face
Point – the front end of the arrow
Point of Aim – The place where you point while casting arrows
Quiver – A device for storing an arrow
Range – A place to shoot archery
Rebound – An arrow that bounces off the target. It may count if it is observed
Recurve – The portion of the bow that curves forward near the ends
Release – A device used in drawing the string. And the act of letting the string go
Round – Several Games usually at different distances
Semi Recurve – Not as much recurve as a full recurve
Serving – The thread around the string to prolong the life of the string
Shaft – The large portion of the arrow
Shaft Size – A method of selecting arrows
Shelf – The bottom of the sight window
Shooting Line -The line where you stand to shoot
Side Quiver – A quiver on the side of the toxophilite
Sight Pin – A part of the sight
Sight Window – The flat, narrow, middle of the riser that allows the arrow to leave the bow straight
Snake – An arrow lost in the grass
Snap Shooting – Instinctive shooting
Spine – The relative stiffness of the arrow
Stance – The first of the Steps to the Ten Ring
Straight Bow – No recurve
String Height – The distance from the pivot point to the string while the bow is let down
Stringer – A device to assist the stringing of a bow
Tackle – All the accessories of archery
Take-down Bow – A bow with removable limbs
Target Face – The colored part of the target.
Tips – Target, Field, Blunt, Fish, Broad head,
Toxophilite – An archer
Tune – Adjusting the bow for best flight
Vane – Plastic fletching
