Kilns

The ACC clay studio is equipped with a wide assortment of kilns, with space and extra bricks for experimental kilns.  Other than the Bailey car kiln, we build all of our own gas and wood kilns, and students are expected to participate in the process from start to finish whenever a kiln is constructed or rebuilt.  We maintain a large dirt/sand pile dedicated to pitfire and bonfire processes.  Our current lineup of kilns includes:

  • One 1-cubic-foot L&L Easy-Fire electric test kiln
  • Three 7-cubic-foot L&L Easy-Fire toploader electrics
  • One 7-cubic-foot Skutt Kiln-Sitter toploader electric
  • One 24-cubic-foot L&L frontloader electric
  • One 45-cubic-foot downdraft gas kiln
  • One 30-cubic-foot Bailey downdraft gas car kiln
  • One 6-cubic-foot downdraft gas test kiln
  • One 30-cubic-foot crossdraft gas salt kiln
  • One 20-cubic-foot crossdraft gas soda kiln
  • One 45-cubic-foot crossdraft “Ruggles and Rankin”-style wood kiln
  • One 200-cubic-foot “hoggama” hybrid anagama/groundhog wood kiln
