This choice seems obvious\u00a0at first glance as\u00a0hydrogen is very energy-dense on a unit-mass\u00a0basis\u00a0and its combustion produces only water as its primary emission. However, complications with\u00a0hydrogen\u2019s\u00a0production and liquid-phase storage requirements and low volumetric energy density currently make it practically and economically more inconvenient to use as a combustion fuel than conventional hydrocarbons. Fortunately, ammonia fuel addresses these specific complications while fitting the criteria of being a carbon-free fuel, albeit while ignoring the issue of\u00a0ammonia\u2019s\u00a0toxicity. Unfortunately, ammonia combustion has its own challenges with\u00a0very low\u00a0flammability and high NOx emissions that must be addressed\u00a0in order for\u00a0it to be\u00a0a viable\u00a0replacement for pure hydrogen. This presentation will show CFD simulations of an aero-engine gas turbine combustor designed for the NASA\u00a0CarbonLess\u00a0Electric\u00a0AviatioN\u00a0(CLEAN) project that\u00a0utilizes\u00a0detailed combustion chemistry and a one-step surface reaction for ammonia decomposition that addresses the low flammability and high NOx issues in one package.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hydrogen has long been at the center of attention as the fuel of the future to achieve carbon-free gas turbine power generation.
