Based on innovation-driven approaches to learning, the Foundry leverages two paradigms, <strong>Knowledge Acquisition<\/strong> and <strong>Knowledge Transfer<\/strong>, to engage students in an iterative learning process comprised of six steps that begin with the identification of a challenge related to the course content and finalizes with the development of innovative solutions that address this challenge (i.e., prototypes of innovative technology).&nbsp; The platform is meant to be adaptive and has been implemented at course, program, and administrative levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Inspiration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Foundry Model is inspired by the view by Papert that <em>\u201c[knowledge is constructed] felicitously in a context where the learning is conscientiously engaged in constructing a public entity, whether it is a sandcastle on a beach or a theory of the universe.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Background<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As the Cambridge dictionary indicates the <em>Renaissance<\/em> is a <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/period\">period<\/a> when there was a new <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/increase\">increase<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/interest\">interest<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/activity\">activity<\/a> in \u201csomething\u201d &#8211; for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/art\">art<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/literature\">literature<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/idea\">ideas<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/europe\">Europe<\/a> during the 15th and 16th <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/century\">centuries<\/a>. In addition, a \u201cfoundry\u201d or <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/factory\">factory<\/a> is a place where hard materials (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/metal\">metal<\/a>s) are <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/specially\">specially<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/shaped\">shaped<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/produce\">produce<\/a> new <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/machine\">machine<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/part\">parts<\/a>.
