It\u00a0is imperative to make the process of knee replacement surgery more objective\u00a0by developing a data driven approach to ligamentous balance, which increases\u00a0implant life. In this work, piezoelectric materials are considered for both sensing\u00a0and energy harvesting applications in the total knee replacement implants. This\u00a0work aims to embed piezoelectric material in the polyethylene tibial component\u00a0of a knee replacement unit to act as sensors that will aid in the alignment and\u00a0balance of the knee replacement by providing intraoperative feedback to the\u00a0surgeon. Postoperatively, the piezoelectric sensors can monitor the structural\u00a0health of the implant in order to perceive potential problems before they become\u00a0bothersome to the patient. Specifically, this work will discuss the use of\u00a0finite element modeling coupled with uniaxial compression testing to prove that\u00a0piezoelectric stacks can be utilized to harvest sufficient energy to power the sensors\u00a0needed for this application.
