Officially started on September 10, 2021, the Ashraf Islam Engineering Building will be Tech’s newest innovative expansion, creating a space for interdisciplinary collaboration as students learn and explore the design process. The building will be the first engineering facility built in over 50 years.
A Construction Partner
The Center for Construction and Building Information Modeling is instrumental and active in the construction process. We take drone surveillance to provide live updates with the building progress, shown in a gallery below.
CCBIM also is working on installing seismic sensors and other instruments within the building itself to provide live seismic readings for the Cookeville area. Sensors have been installed in key locations in the Ashraf Islam Engineering building, these sensors will monitor the structural health of the building. The sensors will collect important data to improve structural design assumptions for seismic and wind loading. BIM was used to plan the sensor layout. BIM helped ensure that the sensors would not clash with any other objects in the building and provided insight on the optimal mounting locations. This figure shows each distinct sensor location throughout the building.
