To know if you have 32- or 64-bit,\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Right click on <strong>This PC<\/strong> in Windows <strong>File Explorer<\/strong> and go to <strong>Properties<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the \u201c<strong>System<\/strong>\u201d type line, it should say either 64-bit Operating System or 32-bit Operating System.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once you click on the correct download link, it will take you to the VS Code \u201c<strong>Getting Started<\/strong>\u201d page, and a download of the executable file should automatically begin.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Run the executable (double click on it from your downloads folder) to install VS Code, and check \u201c<strong>I accept the agreement<\/strong>\u201d and click <strong>Next<\/strong> button<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the location in your computer to install VS Code (<em>you can leave it to the default if you want<\/em>) and click <strong>Next<\/strong> button<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check ALL the check boxes in the &#8220;<strong>Select Additional Tasks<\/strong>&#8221; screen:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> <strong>Create Desktop Icon<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Add &#8220;Open with Code&#8221; action to Windows Explorer file context menu<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Add &#8220;Open with Code&#8221; action to Windows Explorer directory context menu<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Register Code as an editor for supported file types<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Add to PATH<\/strong><br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then, click <strong>Next <\/strong>button in the &#8220;Select Additional Tasks&#8221; screen.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Install<\/strong> button to start installation.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After completion of setup, click <strong>Finish<\/strong> button to finish installation of VS Code.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you select the \u201c<strong>Launch Visual Studio Code<\/strong>\u201d check box in step 7 above then it directly launches VS Code initially. Otherwise, you can launch VS Code by clicking the Desktop VS code icon.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">STEP TWO: Install C++ Extension to VS Code<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click on the <strong>Extensions<\/strong> button &nbsp;in VS Code. It is in the menu on the left side (see image below).<br>Then, type &#8220;<strong>C++<\/strong>&#8221; in the <strong>search bar<\/strong> (see image below) and hit the Enter key on your keyboard to display all extensions related to C++.<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.tntech.edu\/acrockett\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/108\/2026\/04\/vscode-extensions.png\" alt=\"vscode extensions\"><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then, click on the <strong>C\/C++ Extension Pack<\/strong> Microsoft extension and click the <strong>Install <\/strong>button.
